What the Small Things Know

In this series, I delve into the hidden worlds beneath our feet and beneath the waves—the forest floor and the ocean depths. These often-overlooked ecosystems are filled with the quiet resilience of small things. Lichen clings to stones, fungi turn decay into new life, and coral structures emerge from fragile beginnings. Each of these elements tells a story of survival, adaptation, and renewal.

Using encaustic mixed media, I capture these forms in layers of wax and pigment, reflecting the way nature layers time and experience. The textures of the soil and sea remind us that resilience isn’t just about strength; it’s also about connection; like how moss thrives in the shade, reefs depend on currents, and we rely on one another.

As humans, we experience our own cycles of growth, loss, and rebirth. The understory and the reef show us that resilience is a collective journey, not just an individual one. My paintings invite you to see yourself in these ecosystems, to understand that just as the forest floor and ocean depths endure, so do we, carrying forward light, hope, and joy even in the most fragile of times.
