Biography: Anne Stine

Anne Stine Fine Art
interview with Anne Stine, encaustic artist

Artist Statement

I create luminous, nature‑inspired encaustic paintings that offer a moment of calm in a fast and shifting world. My work draws from landscapes, waterways, and hidden ecosystems, translating their geometry, textures, and colors into layered surfaces that feel both intimate and expansive. Each piece is shaped by memory and emotion, inviting viewers into an experience that is nurturing, contemplative, and deeply restorative.

My connection to nature began in childhood where I spent long hours drawing trees, flowers, and woodland creatures, forming a bond with the natural world that has guided my life and artistic practice ever since. That early companionship evolved into a deeper study of how nature mirrors our own lives through themes like community, resilience, and growth. These ideas continue to inform my work, allowing me to personify the landscapes I paint and create a more personal relationship between the viewer and the environment we share.

My process is rooted in close observation and reflection. I begin outdoors, noticing and sketching the subtle shifts of color, texture, and patterns that others might pass by. In the studio, I translate these impressions into multi‑layered encaustic paintings, using molten beeswax, natural resin, and pigment fused with heat to wood panels. This slow, tactile process creates surfaces with depth and complexity, echoing the mystery of the natural world and transforming it into a visual experience.

Ultimately, my work is an invitation to pause and reconnect — with nature, with memory, and with oneself. In interior spaces, these paintings act as quiet anchors, bringing depth, luminosity, and a sense of calm that elevates the atmosphere of a room. Their layered, sculptural surfaces create a refined focal point that enriches both the environment and the experience of those who live with them.

Artist Biography

Anne Stine is an artist whose lifelong connection with the natural world became the foundation for her life and contemporary art practice. During childhood, Anne focused on drawing the flora and fauna around her, imagining a future that blended art, natural science, and a deep appreciation for the environment. She began her studies in Geology at Virginia Tech before shifting to Art and Communications, a transition that allowed her to merge creativity with a strategic understanding of the art world. After graduating, she combined her two passions of art and nature into a successful career in arts marketing, specializing in fundraising for major art and natural history museums. During this time, she continued her formal art education at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC. Her exploration of classical landscape painting eventually led her to establish a decorative painting business for luxury interiors in 2003 while raising a family.

Anne’s fine art career took a transformative turn in 2016 when she discovered encaustic beeswax painting. Drawn to the medium’s luminous depth and sculptural possibilities, she embraced this ancient medium as a way to create richly layered, atmospheric original works. From her studio in Purcellville, Virginia, she has created an expansive portfolio and introduced hundreds of students to encaustic painting through her popular workshops.

Anne enjoys collaborating with interior designers, curators, and collectors to create environments that feel intentional, elevated, and emotionally resonant. She approaches each partnership with a sensitivity to space, light, and mood, helping clients select or commission artwork that brings depth and meaning to the interiors they curate.

Anne’s artwork has been featured in distinguished solo exhibitions throughout the Washington DC region, including the Athenaeum in Alexandria, Virginia;  Touchstone Gallery in Washington DC; Findings Art Gallery in Lynchburg, Virginia; and Byrne Gallery in Middleburg, Virginia. Her work is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Encaustic Art in Cerrillos, New Mexico; and several corporate installations. She is represented by Touchstone Gallery, Byrne Gallery, Vault of Visions Gallery, and Visitation Gallery in the greater DC area.

Beyond her own studio practice, Anne is deeply committed to supporting the arts in her community. While living in Purcellville, she has taught community workshops, organized an artist studio tour, spoken to local art groups about the business of art, and helped establish a community art gallery to give local artists a place to exhibit their work. She also continues to volunteer with local nature conservancy organizations, contributing to the preservation of the natural world that has inspired her since childhood.
