interview with Anne Stine, encaustic artist

Artist Statement

I paint landscapes and abstracted natural forms that feel both familiar and intimate. The rolling hills, shorelines, forests, and shifting skies that appear in my work reflect not only the textures, colors, and rhythms of the natural world but also my own memories and emotions. I want my paintings to feel like encounters with a close friend, nurturing, calming, and deeply restorative.

My life as an artist began in childhood, when I first formed a friendship with nature. Growing up in the 1970s, I spent most of my time in the woods, drawing the trees and woodland animals I saw as playmates. That compassionate way of seeing the world has stayed with me and continues to shape the meaning behind my work. I paint to honor that early companionship and to share the serenity I have always found outdoors. Over time, my curiosity about nature grew into deeper study and exploration. As I learned more about its characteristics, I began to notice how closely our lives mirror the natural world through themes like community, resilience, and growth. These ideas now guide my work, helping me personify nature and foster a more personal relationship with the environment we share. Nature offers me strength, serenity, and purpose, and my art is a way of extending that gift to others.

My process is rooted in observation and reflection, noticing the details others might pass by. I begin outdoors, paying attention to the textures, colors, and rhythms that speak to me. Back in the studio, I translate those impressions into paintings using layers of mixed media and encaustic, a paint made by combining molten beeswax, natural resin, and pigment. I apply these layers to wood panels and fuse them with heat. This process allows the materials to echo the depth and complexity of the natural world and transform it into a visual experience.

Ultimately, I want my art to feel like an invitation to pause, to breathe, and to experience nature as a source of healing. I hope it reminds people that our world is not only beautiful but also deeply nurturing, a place where we can find restoration and connection both outside and within ourselves.

Artist Biography

Anne Stine’s connection to nature began in childhood, when she spent most of her time wandering the forests near her home. This early bond with the natural world became the foundation for her life as an artist and eventually led her to a career as a mixed media painter.

In the 1970s, Anne filled her free hours drawing the flora and fauna that surrounded her in suburban northern Virginia. She dreamed of becoming both an artist and an environmental scientist, imagining a life spent studying and painting the world she loved. She began her studies in Geology at Virginia Tech, but her equal passion for art and business inspired her to shift her focus to Art and Communications. After graduating, she launched a career in arts marketing, specializing in fundraising for major art and natural history museums. During this time, she continued her art education at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC. Her exploration of classical landscape painting eventually led her to establish a mural painting business in 2003.

Anne’s dream of creating original fine art came to life in 2016 when she discovered encaustic painting. Her love for this ancient medium, made from molten beeswax, natural resin, and pigment, opened a new chapter in her creative life. From her studio in Purcellville, Virginia, she began teaching workshops and has since introduced hundreds of students to the joy and expressive possibilities of painting with wax.

Anne’s artwork has been featured in solo exhibitions throughout the Washington DC region, including the Athenaeum in Alexandria, Touchstone Gallery in Washington DC, and Byrne Gallery in Middleburg, Virginia. Her work is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Encaustic Art in Cerrillos, New Mexico. She is represented by Touchstone Gallery, Byrne Gallery, Vault of Visions Gallery, and Visitation Gallery in the greater DC area.

Beyond her own studio practice, Anne is deeply committed to supporting the arts in her community. While living in Purcellville, she has taught community workshops, organized an artist studio tour, spoken to local art groups about the business of art, and helped establish a community art gallery to give local artists a place to exhibit their work. She also continues to volunteer with local nature conservancy organizations, contributing to the preservation of the natural world that has inspired her since childhood.
