Meet the artist . . .
Anne Stine is a mixed media artist based in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Her multi‑layered encaustic paintings are inspired by a deep passion for the geometry, patterns, colors, and textures found in nature. Known for vivid color, dramatic texture, and luminous depth, her work blends abstraction and observation to explore how landscapes, waterways, and hidden ecosystems shape our sense of place and memory.
Current Work
This spring, Stine is developing a new abstract series inspired by the hidden, common forms of life found beneath our feet in the forest. This body of work continues her exploration of themes like ecological interdependence, resilience and the layered, shifting nature of memory.
Her process involves a delicate balance of layering and scraping, allowing each piece to reveal hidden textures and stories beneath the surface. Through this tactile approach, Stine invites viewers to slow down and engage with the subtle complexities of the natural world. The new series also reflects her ongoing commitment to sustainability, using eco-friendly materials whenever possible to honor the environments that inspire her. Collectors interested in early access to new pieces are invited to join her newsletter to receive announcements of new releases.
Artistic Approach
Stine’s practice centers on contemporary encaustic painting — molten beeswax, pigment, and heat — which she uses to build richly layered surfaces that echo the natural world. Over time, her work has evolved from representational landscapes into more conceptual abstract nature art, reflecting her interest in memory, perception, and the emotional resonance of place. Her paintings appeal to collectors and curators seeking textured, luminous, nature‑inspired contemporary art.
What is encaustic?
Encaustic paint is a unique and ancient medium made from a blend of molten beeswax, damar resin, and pigments. Applied in layers while warm, each layer is fused with a blowtorch, creating rich textures and luminous surfaces. This versatile medium allows for vibrant colors, depth, and a tactile quality that invites exploration.
In her work, Anne often incorporates mixed media as a foundational base or to add intricate details. Using materials like India ink, pan pastels, chalk paint, and wax pencil, she creates layered compositions that bring extra texture and dimension to the encaustic surface. These elements blend seamlessly with the wax, adding complexity and depth that draw the viewer deeper into the artwork.

“I find Anne Stine’s work addictive because it transports me
to those times and places that have meant the most to me in my life.”

Featured Series: Deep Memory
Deep Memory is Stine’s most recent completed series of abstract encaustic paintings. These works explore how memories surface, fade, and transform over time, drawing inspiration from underwater environments and personal experience.
