This month, the collection is all about visiting the beach – even if only in my imagination. I used a series of seascape photos I took years ago while visiting Deer Isle, ME; Emerald Isle, NC; and Tampa, FL. WHAT IS ENCAUSTIC?

Each piece is made from encaustic wax applied to birch wood panel. Encaustic paint is a mixture of beeswax, natural tree sap resin, and pigment. I heat the paint on a hotplate and then apply it on to a cradled wood panel using brushes. Every layer of wax needs to be fused with a blow torch to ensure it is fully bonded to the surface. My encaustic artwork is known for its vivid color, dramatic texture and unique organic visual design. My inspiration is the beautiful scenery in nature that holds special meaning in my heart. In this month’s VIRTUAL ART exhibit, you will see the entire 2020 collection titled, “Close to Home”. This slideshow presentation is a collection of 30 paintings centered around landscapes of northern Virginia created in 2020.

It was very discouraging to me when all of our travel plans were cancelled due to the pandemic — especially a trip to Italy I had planned to take with my daughter this past spring. However, on the up side, the travel restrictions gave me a stronger appreciation of the beauty found just outside my backdoor.

Over the year, daily hikes filled my days where I found inspiration for this collection. Surrounding myself with the peace of nature was how I dealt with the craziness of 2020. From the quiet stillness of the first snowfall to the intense color of an autumn sunset,  I hope viewing this collection brings you joy today.

Loveliest of Trees

The cherry tree is the loveliest of trees to me not only for its opulent burst of white and pink but also for its symbolism of hope. It is the dear memories of me as a little girl walking hand in hand with my dad as we strolled along the Washington DC tidal basin, breathing in the hope of spring. It is Friday night in a southern beach town, as vacationers and locals gather at the “best spot in town” to view a magnificent sunset over the marsh and celebrate the end of the week. We all drink in the color before it disappears, and the nightlife begins. Mixed media includes encaustic, pigmented shellac, and oils. Mounted in black floater frame.

On a Salty Day

On a salty warm day in Maine, I step gingerly among the barnacled rocks, hoping to spy a small starfish peeking from beneath the seaweed. I hear a loon in the distance calling to its mate, as the soft waves lap the rocky shore. Mixed media includes encaustic, oils, small pebbles, and nails. Mounted in white floater frame.

This collage piece depicts a warm afternoon on my favorite beach in Deer Isle, Maine. Look closely and you can see the base layer of a map. The rocks are highly textured and contain many color variations. Mixed media includes encaustic, paper collage, gauze, oils, pastels, and wax pencil. Mounted in a black floater frame.

Autumn in Loudoun

Loudoun County, Virginia, is known for its amazing beauty, especially during the fall foliage season. The calming cool tones of the distant Blue Ridge Mountains dances with the warm vibrant hues of blazing trees in the foreground. Mixed media includes encaustic, oils, and pastels. Driving along the Virginia interstate, I see multiple farm properties along the way. The Blue Ridge Mountains serve as the backdrop as the fog rolls in on this quaint rural setting. Mixed media includes encaustic, oils, wax pencil. Mounted in black floater frame.

“Deep Rooted, We Shall Remain”

The roots of our being grow, form and stretch. They take
hold and touch one another, able to bear and endure the
roughness of the elements and able to sustain the weight
of our core. The roots appear to come from a single
source, but are actually two trees. A life shared together as

“Pirouette at Dawn”

I reach the summit after a long upward hike and I am
greeted there by a whimsical figuer of a tree performing a
dance perched upon her rocky clift. The songs of robins
and a cello-throated dove make fitting music for pliez and
turns, and arabesques.

“Spring Can Not Be Cancelled”

Each Spring, my heart yearns to visit Washington DC to
see the magnificent display of cherry trees in full bloom
along the tidal basin. Unfortunately, during the COVID-19
pandemic 2020, the area was closed to visitors. It was yet
another sign of the new “normal” that would continue for
an unknown time. I express my conflicting emotions of the
joy of Spring against the melancholy of not being able to
fully experience it as I had as a child. There is hope in the
fact that Spring can never be cancelled.

“Stillness Moves”

As a child, I sought refuge at the neighborhood stream
where I skipped rocks and played with crayfish. Whenever
stressful moments threatened my peace, I ran from my
house with the screen door slamming behind me to the
one place I could find freedom and serenity in my solitude.
I seek that same respite from the trauma created by the
recent COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Fortunately, there is a
quaint stream not far from my current residence where I
sit and breath in the same serenity I craved so long ago.

Art Sweet Art Gallery will also hold an Artist Talk event on Friday, October 11, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm including the artists. Fink will speak at 7:30 pm followed by Stine at 7:45 pm. Both artists will share their inspiration behind their work and insights into their creative process. A question and answer period will follow the artists’ presentations. Light refreshments will be available.

While Fink paints in oils and Stine works in encaustic mixed media, both use vibrant color and textural elements to define their work. All paintings on exhibit are for sale.
