I’ve always been fascinated with rivers. They’re a place where I can sit, quiet my thoughts, and ponder life for a blissful moment. I think of how a river is constantly changing and admire its slow, steady, determined flow to its destination. Unlike streams that are rushing, jumping, churning; the river has grown up and knows where its going and how to get there.

This collection of encaustic mixed media paintings is inspired by river waterways located around the east coast, USA.  The majority of the imagery is from the Northern Neck region of coastal Virginia where I spent some time this year. During my visits there, I recorded its beautiful scenery through photographs and plein air studies that I used to create larger works with encaustic in the studio. My intent was to capture not only the beauty of the river landscape, but also a sense of its vibrant life. At times the river appears like a dream as it wears its mysterious cloak of fog in the early morning hours. Other times, it’s moving, lively, and bright in the mid-day sun. My favorite hours on the river are at dusk where I feel the sleepy serenity of nightfall and hear ospreys’ distant calls as the sun begins to set.

The collection could be viewed as a travel guide that tells a story of life on the river. My trademark style of using vivid color, dramatic texture, and luminosity adds an emotive quality to each piece.

Rivers will always be my chosen sanctuary when life becomes too turbulent. I hope this collection inspires you to visit a nearby river and experience their powerful presence for yourself.

This month, you will find my encaustic work leaning more towards the contemporary with minimal details and more expressive brushwork and texture. I’m focusing on how color and composition create an emotional response in the viewer rather than imitating nature.

“Between Us,” was created using the Old Master’s palette of ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, and yellow ochre to give a restful feeling to this lovely scene of the Potomac as it separates Virginia and Maryland at Brunswick, MD. There are multiple layers of clear encaustic over the water area creating dramatic texture to give the impression of rippling water. The texture is mirrored slightly in the sky to give a cohesiveness to the work. An underpainting of rich golden yellow gives a beautiful luminosity to the foliage.

“Discovery” is an abstract painting full of rich color and dreamy imagery. The initial painting is an encaustic monotype created by placing rice paper on the hot palette laden with paint. I fused the paper onto a cradled wood panel and extended the image on all sides of the panel. I added a punch of color with a palette knife of water-soluble encaustic paint and oil stick to create a strong focal point to this piece.

“Climb” was created in a vibrant full spectrum palette to suggest the energy and joy of youth. It’s reminiscent of climbing and jumping from boulder to boulder as a child at a favorite local park. The inspiration is the Bear’s Den Overlook on the Appalachian Trail in northern Virginia.

“Lavender Night” is a nocturne piece created with a palette of luscious blues and purples to depict a river scene at night. This analogous palette evokes a feeling of calm and tranquility. Dramatic texture is added to the water area to depict the rippling water as it sparkles in the moonlight. This little painting is unframed and will fit most standard 5″x7″ frames.

“Rest Stop”  was created in a split-primary palette to evoke a sense of rest and relaxation. After a busy day of hiking in Maryland, this serene spot was a welcoming sight for us weary weekend warriors. This little painting is unframed, and the image extends on the 1/2 inch sides of the cradled wood panel.

The Shenandoah River is a favorite subject of mine. My whole life I’ve spent wandering her silent shores in search of beautiful discoveries. As a child, I’d skip rocks along the surface or hunt for little minnows swimming beneath the surface. I find comfort to this day in simply gazing at her silent current.

On a crisp winter’s morning in Loudoun County, Virginia, I headed out to the river running through the now-abandoned golf course formerly known as Virginia National Golf Course. It is now a lovely nature reserve run by the Shenandoah University. I was fascinated by the reflection of the bare trees on the river’s surface. Especially intriguing was how the linear design of the tree reflections were intersected by the rocky shore. The palette of winter in this encaustic painting is subtle – soft grays, blues, and browns. These colors add to the softness of the moment and express a sense of serenity I knew I wanted to capture in wax and oils.

When starting a landscape painting, I do several composition sketches to determine the best design for the encaustic painting. You can see below my thumbnail sketch and small study painting created in gouache. This is a crucial first step to avoid composition pitfalls that would be a big hassle to change once the painting is underway.

Below is a video showing the next step of creating the base painting using pan pastels. After the wood panel is coated with a clear encaustic medium to protect the base painting, many layers of encaustic paint are applied. Other media I used to created the imagery of small rocks included pigmented shellac and wax crayon.

The Washington DC area comes alive every Spring with the celebration of the blossoming cherry trees that reside along the DC tidal basin. It’s become a pilgrimage journey for me every year to witness their splendor and remember how beauty is constantly present all around us.

The blossom color ranges from a pure bright white to a vivid pink depending on the variety. I chose the composition to include the iconic image of the Jefferson Memorial, a favorite location for locals and sight seers alike. With all of the turmoil and ugliness surrounding the Washington DC area in the past year, I felt compelled to paint an image that reminds us of the extraordinary beauty still alive and thriving in the nation’s capitol.

In this month’s VIRTUAL ART exhibit, you will see the entire 2020 collection titled, “Close to Home”. This slideshow presentation is a collection of 30 paintings centered around landscapes of northern Virginia created in 2020.

It was very discouraging to me when all of our travel plans were cancelled due to the pandemic — especially a trip to Italy I had planned to take with my daughter this past spring. However, on the up side, the travel restrictions gave me a stronger appreciation of the beauty found just outside my backdoor.

Over the year, daily hikes filled my days where I found inspiration for this collection. Surrounding myself with the peace of nature was how I dealt with the craziness of 2020. From the quiet stillness of the first snowfall to the intense color of an autumn sunset,  I hope viewing this collection brings you joy today.

This month, the collection is all about the colors of Fall — deep green, rich yellow, vibrant orange. There is something comforting about gazing upon the warm hues of autumn. The mind finds rest in the softness that sparks memories of family gatherings with the smell of pumpkin spice and hot cocoa in the air. We enjoy nestling in cozy blankets and warming ourselves by the fire.
