Once in a while, a unique opportunity comes along that I’d never have imagined in a million years. This happened to me last month when a musical composer and pianist, Margin Alexander, contacted me and asked if I’d be interested in having my painting, “Inner Lines,” featured in an online musical event titled, “The Timbre of Canvases”. His vision was to create an event combining the two art forms of painting and music into one.

Margin had seen the painting on Instagram, and he told me it instantly caught his attention and he wished to compose a musical piece to reflect his interpretation of the artwork.

The event took place as a live broadcast on YouTube on May 30, 2022, and included 12 paintings by artists all over the world handpicked by Margin as inspiration for his musical compilation.

For my piece, he explained during the performance, “this (painting) seems to be something mythological and philosophical, and it made me think a lot. I started liking the fact that I was led deep into my thoughts into the meaning of it.  It’s quite hypnotic.”

I was brought to tears when I heard the beautiful piece Margin created. It was a powerful experience to hear a melodic interpretation of work that I created from deep within my creative spirit.

This month, you will find my encaustic work leaning more towards the contemporary with minimal details and more expressive brushwork and texture. I’m focusing on how color and composition create an emotional response in the viewer rather than imitating nature.

“Between Us,” was created using the Old Master’s palette of ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, and yellow ochre to give a restful feeling to this lovely scene of the Potomac as it separates Virginia and Maryland at Brunswick, MD. There are multiple layers of clear encaustic over the water area creating dramatic texture to give the impression of rippling water. The texture is mirrored slightly in the sky to give a cohesiveness to the work. An underpainting of rich golden yellow gives a beautiful luminosity to the foliage.

“Discovery” is an abstract painting full of rich color and dreamy imagery. The initial painting is an encaustic monotype created by placing rice paper on the hot palette laden with paint. I fused the paper onto a cradled wood panel and extended the image on all sides of the panel. I added a punch of color with a palette knife of water-soluble encaustic paint and oil stick to create a strong focal point to this piece.

“Climb” was created in a vibrant full spectrum palette to suggest the energy and joy of youth. It’s reminiscent of climbing and jumping from boulder to boulder as a child at a favorite local park. The inspiration is the Bear’s Den Overlook on the Appalachian Trail in northern Virginia.

“Lavender Night” is a nocturne piece created with a palette of luscious blues and purples to depict a river scene at night. This analogous palette evokes a feeling of calm and tranquility. Dramatic texture is added to the water area to depict the rippling water as it sparkles in the moonlight. This little painting is unframed and will fit most standard 5″x7″ frames.

“Rest Stop”  was created in a split-primary palette to evoke a sense of rest and relaxation. After a busy day of hiking in Maryland, this serene spot was a welcoming sight for us weary weekend warriors. This little painting is unframed, and the image extends on the 1/2 inch sides of the cradled wood panel.

Temperature Rising, 24″x36″, encaustic on birch panel

A painting by Virginia artist, Anne Stine, was installed in May 2021, as part of the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Encaustic Art in Cerrillos, New Mexico. The piece, titled, “Temperature’s Rising,” is a 24”x36” landscape created in encaustic wax on wood panel. It depicts a bridge over icy waters, as the sun is setting on the bay in Duxbury, Massachusetts, which is a favorite vacation spot of the artist.

Anne Stine, a fine artist living in Purcellville, VA, is best known for her contemporary landscape paintings created with vivid color and dramatic texture in the ancient medium of encaustic wax. Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Encaustic artwork is painted with pigmented beeswax mixed with a natural damar resin (crystallized tree sap) onto a wood panel and then fused using a heat source, such as a heat gun or propane torch. Stine paints her landscapes using this technique and adds other media such as pigmented shellac, alcohol inks, rice paper, and found objects to her paintings.

Stine was contacted this past spring by the Museum’s founder, Douglas Mehrens, and invited to participate in their permanent collection, which is on display at their Cerrillos location.

Mehrens states, “Anne Stine’s recent acquisition, ‘Temperature’s Rising,’ into the Museum of Encaustic Art, is a perfect addition to the diversity of the museum’s permanent collection.  Anne’s expertise in the encaustic medium draws the eye not only into her composition but also with the moody luminosity of the medium itself.  Her subject matter is reflective of our yearly themed national juried exhibition ‘Global Warming is REAL’ and gives the viewer something to ponder.”

The Museum of Encaustic Art’s Permanent Collection was created to archive an eclectic variety of styles and techniques in encaustic wax art and to further promote the medium. The Museum, with over 450 works of art in its Permanent Collection archive, rotates its exhibited collection of 124 pieces of artwork in the Cerrillos location and its online gallery found at https://www.eainm.com/museum-of-encaustic-art-permanent-collection/.

“Encaustic allows me to express the intensity, fluidity, and varied textures found in nature more realistically than any other medium,” states Stine. “It’s truly an honor to have my work exhibited in the only museum in the nation dedicated to encaustic art and play a part in promoting the medium in the DC area.”

Stine’s work can be found in private and public collections across the county, and in the permanent collection at District Arts contemporary art gallery in Frederick, MD. “Deep Rooted, We Shall Remain”

hold and touch one another, able to bear and endure the

source, but are actually two trees. A life shared together as

“Loveliest of Trees”

The cherry tree is the loveliest of trees to me not only for
its opulent burst of white and pink but also for its
symbolism of hope. It’s the dear memories of me as a little
girl walking hand in hand with my dad as we strolled along
the Washington DC tidal basin breathing in the hope of

I reach the summit after a long upward hike and I am
greeted there by a whimsical figuer of a tree performing a
dance perched upon her rocky clift. The songs of robins
and a cello-throated dove make fitting music for pliez and
turns, and arabesques.

“Spring Can Not Be Cancelled”

Each Spring, my heart yearns to visit Washington DC to
see the magnificent display of cherry trees in full bloom
along the tidal basin. Unfortunately, during the COVID-19
pandemic 2020, the area was closed to visitors. It was yet
another sign of the new “normal” that would continue for
an unknown time. I express my conflicting emotions of the
joy of Spring against the melancholy of not being able to
fully experience it as I had as a child. There is hope in the
fact that Spring can never be cancelled.

“Stillness Moves”

As a child, I sought refuge at the neighborhood stream
where I skipped rocks and played with crayfish. Whenever
stressful moments threatened my peace, I ran from my
house with the screen door slamming behind me to the
one place I could find freedom and serenity in my solitude.
I seek that same respite from the trauma created by the
recent COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Fortunately, there is a
quaint stream not far from my current residence where I
sit and breath in the same serenity I craved so long ago.

Art Sweet Art Gallery will also hold an Artist Talk event on Friday, October 11, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm including the artists. Fink will speak at 7:30 pm followed by Stine at 7:45 pm. Anne Stine, mixed media artist,  will be at a new location for the Western Loudoun Artists Studio Tour . She will be relocating from the Round Hill Arts Center to the  Purcellville Train Station (stop #24 on the tour map). The Station is located at 200 North 21st Street, Purcellville, VA 20132 in historic downtown Purcellville.

This year, Stine’s collection of paintings focuses on water and sky including seascapes, landscapes and skyscapes. She works in mixed media including oils, encaustic paint, pigmented shellac, cold wax medium, alcohol inks, and pastels.

Stine says, “I’m looking forward to my 4th WLAST tour! My art captures my interpretation of the beauty of nature through vivid color and rich textures in multiple translucent layers of paint and other media. This year, I am offering mixed media paintings in a variety of sizes, matted and signed digital prints, and handpainted ceramic tiles for home decor and gifts. North Gate Vineyard Artist-in-Residence Program

Anne Stine Newly Appointed as Artist-in-Residence Purcellville, Virginia

North Gate Vineyard is pleased to announce the appointment of Anne Stine as the program’s newest Artist-in-Residence. Anne will be hosting a public reception showing her work entitled ‘Living Water’ at North Gate Vineyard on Sunday, July 8th, from 3PM to 5PM. Her art will be on display through October 1st, 2018.

On exhibit will be a collection of Anne’s encaustic mixed media paintings centered around the theme of water and its ever-changing moods captured through movement, color and texture. Anne concentrates primarily on the ancient wax based medium of encaustic paint into which she incorporates oils, pigmented shellac, vintage papers, textiles and salvaged found objects. The manipulation of the fluidity of the wax allows her to evoke a realistic element as she captures the beauty of nature using vivid color, rich texture and multiple transparent layers of wax.

Here are a few examples of the work that will be included in the collection ranging from sizes 8″x8″ to 48″x48″ .

A native Virginian, Anne began painting at a young age and developed a love of working with a variety of media. After a career in Arts Marketing, her passion for painting led her to leave a conventional career and open her first creative business, Anne Stine Decorative Painting in 1999. For many years, she delighted residential and commercial clients with her murals until 2014, when she shifted her focus to original art work. In her inspirational blog, Anne encourages others to pursue their creative passions no matter their age or artistic abilities.

Anne’s work has been exhibited at: Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Chongqing, China; Gross-Downing Cultural Arts Center, Newport News, VA; AiM Gallery, Middleburg, Va.; Tryst Gallery, Leesburg, Va.; The Gateway Gallery, Round Hill, Va; 8 Chains Winery, Purcellville, VA; Franklin Arts Center, Purcellville, VA; Harvest Ball Art Show, Salamander Resort, Middleburg, VA 2016; and several local boutiques. She lives in Purcellville, Virginia, with her husband and three children where she works and teaches from her home studio.

“My art focuses on the emotional essence of nature and allows the viewer to slow down, take in the view, and reconnect with their inner self and the natural world,” states Anne.

The North Gate Vineyard Artist-in-Residence program was created to support local artists by providing a venue to show their artwork in a public, formal setting. The program also provides a facility for the artists to conduct other art-related activities such as educational seminars, instructional classes, or in-depth lectures on their artwork or creative process. Displaying their work in such a way provides flexibility for the artist to work at and achieve certain goals they may have in their profession.
