Quiet Grove reflects the calm presence of a community of trees gathered on the bank of the Shenandoah River. This painting holds the feeling of arriving somewhere still and unhurried, a place where light settles gently and the landscape invites you to pause. I’m drawn to these quiet groves because they ground me and provide a place of rest. Through layered texture, softened edges, and muted colors, I captured a memory that creates a moment of calm that a collector can return to; a place that brings a sense of ease and grounded belonging.

“Dawn Follows the River” was born from a quiet morning spent along the Shenandoah River. I sat at the river’s edge with a thermos of tea, listening to the hush between bird calls and watching the current carry my thoughts downstream. That moment—still, reflective, and deeply grounding—became the emotional undercurrent of this painting. Part of my River’s Journey series, it invites viewers to experience the serenity and spaciousness that nature offers when we slow down and listen.

There are moments where my thoughts seem to float around drifting wherever they choose. “The Drift of Knowing” floats between these sensations and memories, tracing the quiet movement of thought as it rises, dissolves, and reforms. It reflects the layered translucent nature of perception — where knowing is never fixed, but always in motion. Created with encaustic wax medium, oil stick, chalk paint and wax pencil.

I named this painting Water’s Path because that’s what I’ve been following for as long as I can remember. As a child, I wandered the woods like a game of hide and go seek, searching for the glimmer of a stream or the soft rush of a hidden waterfall. Water always felt like a secret waiting to be found.

This painting grew from those wanderings. It isn’t a single place but a layered memory of many: mossy stones, cool shadows, the sudden brightness where water reflects the light. Working in encaustic lets me build those sensations into the surface—wax, pigment, and texture echoing the way water moves, gathers, and disappears again. Each layer becomes part of the story, just as each discovery in the woods became part of mine.

This painting began with a sweet little moment at the Waterford Fair. I was wandering through the village when I noticed a line of sheep making their way across a pasture, each one trailing the next like they were playing a quiet game. It was so simple and so endearing that I stopped right there to take it in. The trees were just starting to turn,  and the whole scene felt like a page from a storybook.

Follow the Leader is my way of holding onto that feeling. It’s playful and peaceful, full of the easy charm that makes Loudoun County feel like home.

Coral Memory is a peek into the hidden world beneath the surface, where vibrant color and movement pulse with life. I wanted it to feel joyful and a little mysterious, like discovering a bright coral bloom tucked away in the deep. It’s about the beauty we carry quietly, full of feeling and color even when unseen.
